Description

The Ultimate Patty Melt with Secret Sauce combines juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, melted cheese, and a tangy homemade secret sauce, all sandwiched between crispy, buttery rye bread. It’s a rich and indulgent twist on the classic diner favorite.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp butter (for onions)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter (for bread)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

Instructions

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, add butter and olive oil, then sauté the onions until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Form ground beef into 4 equal patties. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Cook patties in a skillet over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Set aside.
  4. In a bowl, mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, garlic powder, and onion powder to make the secret sauce.
  5. Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.
  6. On the unbuttered side, spread the secret sauce, then layer with one slice of Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, a slice of cheddar cheese, and top with another bread slice (buttered side out).
  7. Grill each sandwich in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown and cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  8. Remove from heat, slice, and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can substitute cheeses to your liking—American or provolone work well too.
  • Use a panini press for extra crispiness.
  • Double the sauce recipe and use it for fries or burgers.
