- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp butter (for onions)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 8 slices rye bread
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp butter (for bread)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp sweet pickle relish
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
Instructions
- In a skillet over medium heat, add butter and olive oil, then sauté the onions until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Set aside.
- Form ground beef into 4 equal patties. Season with salt and pepper.
- Cook patties in a skillet over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Set aside.
- In a bowl, mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, garlic powder, and onion powder to make the secret sauce.
- Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.
- On the unbuttered side, spread the secret sauce, then layer with one slice of Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, a slice of cheddar cheese, and top with another bread slice (buttered side out).
- Grill each sandwich in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown and cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Remove from heat, slice, and serve hot.

- You can substitute cheeses to your liking—American or provolone work well too.
