Description

Pretzel Christmas Crack (Pretzel Toffee) is a delightful holiday treat featuring a crunchy pretzel base covered in buttery toffee, topped with melted semi-sweet chocolate and festive sprinkles or candies. This sweet and salty snack is quick to make and perfect for sharing during the festive season.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 40-48 pretzel crisps (or Pretzel Crackers, or 2-3 cups pretzels not sticks)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup sprinkles (or M&M’s, or candies of choice)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ (175℃) to prepare for baking the toffee-covered pretzels.
  2. Prepare Pan: Line a 15″×10″ rimmed sheet pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray, or use a nonstick silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
  3. Arrange Pretzels: Place the pretzel crisps in a single, even layer at the bottom of the pan. You may need to break some pieces to fill gaps around the edges and create a uniform base.
  4. Make Toffee: In a medium pot over medium-low heat, melt the butter and add the packed brown sugar. Bring to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally. Cook the mixture for 3 minutes until it is bubbling and amber colored. If using a candy thermometer, ensure the toffee reaches 270℉-290℉.
  5. Pour Toffee: Remove the pot from heat and carefully pour the hot toffee evenly over the pretzel layer. Spread it quickly with a spatula to completely cover the pretzels.
  6. Bake Toffee: Place the sheet pan in the oven and bake for 3 to 5 minutes until the toffee mixture starts to bubble.
  7. Add Chocolate Chips: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately scatter the semi-sweet chocolate chips on top. Let them sit for 1-2 minutes to soften, then spread evenly with a spatula. If the chocolate doesn’t melt easily, place the pan back in the oven for 1-2 minutes and try spreading again.
  8. Decorate: Sprinkle your choice of sprinkles or candies evenly over the melted chocolate while it’s still warm.
  9. Cool and Set: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature, or refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour until the chocolate and toffee harden.
  10. Break into Pieces: Once hardened, flip the tray to remove the block of toffee from the pan, peel off the parchment or foil, then break into pieces with your hands or cut with a sharp knife.
  11. Serve and Store: Serve your Pretzel Christmas Crack immediately or store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Ensure an even layer of pretzels for uniform coverage of toffee.
  • Use a candy thermometer for precise toffee temperature, aiming for hard crack stage (270℉-290℉).
  • If chocolate doesn’t melt easily, briefly reheat in the oven for easier spreading.
  • Customize toppings with your favorite candies or sprinkles to match holiday themes.
  • Store in a cool, dry place to maintain crispness—avoid humidity for best texture.
