Description
This Philly Cheesesteak Meatloaf combines the classic flavors of a Philly cheesesteak sandwich with the comforting, hearty appeal of a meatloaf. Ground beef and pork are mixed with sautéed green bell peppers and onions, melted provolone cheese, and seasoned with garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Baked to perfection and optionally topped with extra cheese slices, this dish is perfect as a main course served alongside mashed potatoes or in a hoagie roll for a sandwich twist.
Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- ½ lb ground pork (or use all beef)
- 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 cup shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 2 eggs
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Topping (Optional)
- Extra cheese slices for melting on top (provolone or mozzarella)
Instructions
- Preheat and Sauté Vegetables: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat, then add the finely chopped onion and green bell pepper. Sauté them for 4 to 5 minutes until softened and fragrant. Allow the vegetables to cool slightly before using.
- Mix Meatloaf Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, sautéed vegetables, shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese, breadcrumbs, eggs, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until all ingredients are evenly incorporated, being careful not to overmix to keep the meatloaf tender.
- Shape and Bake: Shape the meat mixture into a loaf and place it into a greased or parchment-lined loaf pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the meatloaf is fully cooked through and an internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
- Add Cheese Topping (Optional): For extra cheesiness, during the last 5 minutes of baking, place cheese slices on top of the meatloaf and return it to the oven to melt perfectly.
- Rest and Serve: Remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes to allow juices to redistribute. Slice and serve warm, ideally with mashed potatoes or inside a hoagie roll for a Philly cheesesteak style sandwich.
Notes
- This meatloaf pairs wonderfully with classic mashed potatoes or can be served in hoagie rolls to mimic a Philly cheesesteak sandwich experience.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze individual slices for meal prep convenience.
- For a lower-fat version, substitute ground pork with additional lean ground beef or turkey, and reduce added oils.
