Description

Savor the iconic flavors of Philadelphia with these Philly Cheese Steak Burgers, featuring juicy ground beef patties topped with sautéed onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, and melted provolone cheese, all sandwiched in a toasted bun. This easy stovetop or grill recipe brings the classic cheesesteak experience to your burger night with a perfect blend of savory, cheesy, and caramelized goodness.

Ingredients

Scale

Burger Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Sautéed Vegetables

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)

Assembly

  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Butter for toasting buns (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Burger Patties: In a bowl, combine the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently to combine without overworking the meat, then form the mixture into 4 evenly sized burger patties. Set them aside to rest briefly.
  2. Sauté the Vegetables: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions, green bell peppers, and mushrooms if using. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened and nicely caramelized. Remove from the skillet and keep warm.
  3. Cook the Burgers: In the same skillet or on a preheated grill over medium-high heat, cook the burger patties for about 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. During the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of provolone cheese and cover the skillet or close the grill lid to melt the cheese thoroughly.
  4. Toast the Buns: While the cheese melts on the burgers, toast the hamburger buns by spreading a little butter on the cut sides and placing them in a skillet or on the grill until golden and crisp.
  5. Assemble the Burgers: Place each cheesy burger patty onto a toasted bun and top generously with the sautéed peppers, onions, and mushrooms. Serve immediately while hot for the best flavor.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a spread of mayonnaise, garlic aioli, or cheese sauce to the buns before assembling.
  • Feel free to swap provolone cheese with American or Swiss cheese depending on your preference.
  • If you do not like mushrooms, simply omit them or try sautéed jalapeños for a spicy kick.
