Ingredients
Scale
Spread
- 4 tablespoons salted butter, softened
- 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
Beef Patties
- 1 pound 80/20 ground beef
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt, divided
- ½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
Sandwich Components
- 8 slices sourdough bread
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- 1 ½ cups caramelized onions
Instructions
- Make Spread: In a small bowl, combine the softened butter and mayonnaise until smooth to create a flavorful spread for the bread.
- Form Patties: In a medium bowl, mix together the ground beef, onion powder, garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of kosher salt, freshly cracked black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Divide this mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into thin patties. Sprinkle the patties with the remaining ½ teaspoon kosher salt.
- Cook Patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties in batches, about 3-4 minutes per side, until they are no longer pink and cooked through.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Spread the butter-mayonnaise mixture on one side of each slice of sourdough bread. On half of the bread slices, layer one slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, and caramelized onions. Top each with another slice of Swiss cheese and a remaining bread slice, spread side down.
- Grill Sandwiches: Wipe out the skillet and return it to medium-low heat. Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet and cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted, approximately 4-5 minutes per side. Press gently with a spatula if needed to ensure even grilling.
- Serve: Remove sandwiches from the skillet, cut each Patty Melt in half, and serve immediately while hot and melty.
Notes
- Use 80/20 ground beef for the best balance of flavor and juiciness.
- Caramelized onions can be prepared ahead of time to save cooking time.
- Adjust salt and pepper according to your taste preferences.
- Butter the bread on the outside if you prefer a crispier crust.
- Use a heavy skillet or cast iron pan for even heat distribution during grilling.
