Description

Light, airy, and delightfully sweet, these Patriotic Meringue Cookies are perfect for your 4th of July celebration. Swirled with red, white, and blue, they melt in your mouth and are a festive treat everyone will love.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 large egg whites, at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red gel food coloring
  • Blue gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a clean mixing bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer on medium speed until foamy.
  3. Add the cream of tartar and continue beating until soft peaks form.
  4. Gradually add the sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, while continuing to beat on high speed until stiff, glossy peaks form.
  5. Beat in the vanilla extract.
  6. Divide the meringue into three parts. Leave one part white, and gently fold red food coloring into one and blue into another.
  7. Spoon each color into its own piping bag or spoon all into one bag side-by-side for a swirled effect. Use a star tip if desired.
  8. Pipe small mounds or kisses onto the prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 1.5 hours, then turn off the oven and let the cookies sit inside for another hour to dry completely.
  10. Once crisp and dry, remove from oven and store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Ensure the mixing bowl is completely clean and free from grease for best meringue results.
  • Use gel food coloring to maintain the meringue consistency.
  • Humidity can affect meringue; bake on a dry day if possible.
