Ingredients

Scale

Meatloaf Mixture

  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 1 cup cracker crumbs
  • 1 1/4 tsp Mrs. Dash seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground breakfast sausage
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3/4 cup ketchup (divided)
  • 4 tsp Worcestershire sauce (divided)

Assembly

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, chilled
  • 1 egg mixed with 1 tsp water (egg wash)
  • 2 edible eyes

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Set aside.
  2. Sauté Onion: Heat olive oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Mix Seasonings and Cracker Crumbs: In a large bowl, combine the garlic powder, Mrs. Dash seasoning, cracker crumbs, and milk. Set aside to allow the crumbs to soak.
  4. Prepare Glaze: In a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup ketchup and 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. Set aside to glaze the meatloaf later.
  5. Combine Meatloaf Ingredients: Add the cooked onions, ground beef, ground breakfast sausage, remaining 1/4 cup ketchup, 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, beaten egg, and the seasoning-crumb mixture into the large bowl. Mix thoroughly until everything is well combined.
  6. Shape Meatloaf: Using your hands, shape the meat mixture on the prepared baking sheet into a head and mummy body form.
  7. Apply Glaze: Spread the ketchup and Worcestershire glaze evenly over the shaped meatloaf.
  8. Bake Meatloaf: Bake in the preheated 350°F oven for 50 minutes.
  9. Cool Meatloaf: Remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it cool for at least 20 minutes. This helps the puff pastry adhere better during assembly.
  10. Increase Oven Temperature: Raise the oven temperature to 425°F (220°C) for baking the puff pastry.
  11. Prepare Puff Pastry Strips: Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut long strips from the chilled puff pastry sheet. Carefully arrange and cover the meatloaf body and head with these strips to resemble mummy wrappings.
  12. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the puff pastry strips with the egg wash (egg mixed with water) to give a golden, shiny finish when baked.
  13. Bake Puff Pastry: Place the assembled meatloaf back into the oven and bake for 20 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and the meatloaf reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) at the thickest part.
  14. Decorate: Add the edible eyes to the mummy meatloaf as desired. Serve warm and enjoy this spooky and delicious centerpiece!

Notes

  • Allow the meatloaf to cool before adding puff pastry to prevent sliding and improve adherence.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure the meatloaf is fully cooked to 160°F internally for food safety.
  • The recipe yields 6 servings, making it great for a family or small group.
  • You can substitute ground pork sausage if preferred for the breakfast sausage.
  • If puff pastry is unavailable, you could try crescent roll dough, but texture and appearance will differ.
  • Edible eyes can be found in baking supply stores or online; alternatively, small pieces of black olives or peppercorns can be used.
