Ingredients
Scale
Sausages and Bread
- 4 Italian sausages (pork, chicken, or plant-based)
- 4 sturdy sandwich rolls or hoagie buns
Vegetables and Seasoning
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 yellow onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional)
Optional Toppings
- Mustard or provolone cheese for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the grill: Prepare your grill to medium-high heat to ensure it is hot enough for cooking sausages evenly with a nice sear.
- Grill sausages: Place the Italian sausages on the grill and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are nicely browned and fully cooked through. For pork sausages, the internal temperature should reach 160°F (71°C).
- Prepare sautéed peppers and onions: While the sausages grill, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced red and green bell peppers along with the sliced yellow onion. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently until the vegetables are softened and slightly caramelized.
- Add garlic and seasonings: Stir in the minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Sauté this mixture for another 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant.
- Deglaze (optional): If using, add balsamic vinegar to the pan and cook for an additional minute to deglaze and enrich the flavor of the sautéed vegetables.
- Toast sandwich rolls: Toast the sandwich rolls on the grill or in a skillet until slightly crisp and warm to enhance texture and flavor.
- Assemble sandwiches: Place one grilled sausage inside each toasted roll. Top generously with the sautéed peppers and onions. Add mustard or provolone cheese if desired for extra taste.
- Serve hot: Serve immediately while the sausage and toppings are warm for the best flavor experience.
Notes
- Prepare ahead by cooking sausages and sautéed vegetables in advance and reheat before assembling sandwiches.
- Pairs well with sides like potato chips, coleslaw, or potato salad for a complete meal.
