Description

Garbage Bread is a hearty stuffed bread featuring a flavorful mix of ground beef, pepperoni, bacon, and cheeses all rolled inside pizza dough. This easy-to-make baked dish offers a perfect combination of savory meats and gooey cheese, ideal for a satisfying main course or casual dinner that uses up leftovers creatively.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough and Meat Filling

  • 1 pound pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup diced pepperoni
  • 1/2 cup cooked and crumbled bacon

For the Cheese and Extras

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup diced pickles or jalapeños (optional)

For the Sauce and Topping

  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef: Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until fully browned. Drain any excess fat and allow the beef to cool slightly to prevent dough from becoming soggy.
  3. Roll Out the Dough: On a floured surface, roll your pizza dough into a large rectangle approximately 10×14 inches, creating enough surface area to layer your fillings evenly.
  4. Assemble the Filling: Spread ketchup and mustard evenly over the dough surface. Then layer the cooked ground beef, diced pepperoni, crumbled bacon, shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, and optional pickles or jalapeños.
  5. Roll and Seal: Starting from one of the longer sides, tightly roll the dough into a log shape, ensuring the filling stays inside. Pinch the edges well to seal the roll and prevent filling from leaking during baking.
  6. Prepare for Baking: Place the rolled dough seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top evenly with the beaten egg to give it a beautiful golden brown finish when baked.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and cooked through, with cheese melted inside.
  8. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the bread cool for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. This rest time allows the filling to set slightly for cleaner slices.

Notes

  • Customize this recipe by adding any leftover meats, vegetables, or sauces you have on hand.
  • For dipping, ranch dressing, BBQ sauce, or hot sauce all pair wonderfully with garbage bread.
  • Ensure the dough is sealed tightly to avoid any filling leakage during baking.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, add more jalapeños or hot sauce inside the filling.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in the oven to maintain the crust’s crispiness.
