Description

Savory and juicy burgers topped with sweet caramelized French onions and melted cheese, served on toasted buns for a gourmet twist on a classic favorite.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 4 slices Swiss or Gruyère cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Optional: mayonnaise, mustard, or other condiments

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter with olive oil.
  2. Add sliced onions, salt, pepper, and sugar. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply browned and caramelized, about 25-30 minutes.
  3. While onions are cooking, preheat grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. In a bowl, mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder. Form into 4 equal patties.
  5. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side or until desired doneness is reached. Add cheese slices in the last minute of cooking to melt.
  6. Toast buns lightly on the grill or in a skillet.
  7. Assemble burgers by placing patties on bottom buns, topping with a generous portion of caramelized onions, and finishing with the top bun. Add optional condiments if desired.
  8. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use Gruyère for a more authentic French flavor.
  • Caramelizing onions takes time; don’t rush the process.
  • These burgers pair well with a light salad or crispy fries.
