Description
Savory and juicy burgers topped with sweet caramelized French onions and melted cheese, served on toasted buns for a gourmet twist on a classic favorite.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 4 slices Swiss or Gruyère cheese
- 4 hamburger buns
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- Optional: mayonnaise, mustard, or other condiments
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter with olive oil.
- Add sliced onions, salt, pepper, and sugar. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply browned and caramelized, about 25-30 minutes.
- While onions are cooking, preheat grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
- In a bowl, mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder. Form into 4 equal patties.
- Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side or until desired doneness is reached. Add cheese slices in the last minute of cooking to melt.
- Toast buns lightly on the grill or in a skillet.
- Assemble burgers by placing patties on bottom buns, topping with a generous portion of caramelized onions, and finishing with the top bun. Add optional condiments if desired.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- Use Gruyère for a more authentic French flavor.
- Caramelizing onions takes time; don’t rush the process.
- These burgers pair well with a light salad or crispy fries.
