Description

A hearty and comforting Balkan dish made with layers of potatoes and ground meat, baked to perfection with a creamy egg topping. This easy Serbian Moussaka is simple to make and packed with flavor.


Ingredients

  • 500g ground beef or pork
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 45 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3 eggs
  • 200ml milk
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (392°F).
  2. In a pan, heat oil and sauté the chopped onions until translucent.
  3. Add the ground meat to the pan, season with salt, pepper, and paprika. Cook until the meat is browned.
  4. Grease a baking dish and layer half of the sliced potatoes on the bottom.
  5. Spread the cooked meat mixture evenly over the potato layer.
  6. Top with the remaining sliced potatoes to cover the meat.
  7. In a bowl, whisk together eggs and milk, then pour the mixture evenly over the potatoes.
  8. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender.
  10. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer for evenly thin potato slices.
  • Can substitute ground meat with ground turkey for a leaner version.
  • Serve with a simple salad or yogurt on the side.
