Description

Crispy Fried Mushrooms are a deliciously crunchy appetizer perfect for parties or a savory snack. Button or cremini mushrooms are coated in a seasoned flour and cornmeal mixture, dipped in an egg wash, and deep-fried to golden perfection. Served hot with your favorite dipping sauce, this recipe delivers a satisfying texture and flavor that’s sure to please mushroom lovers.

Ingredients

Scale

Mushroom coating

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Other ingredients

  • 8 oz button or cremini mushrooms, cleaned and stems trimmed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying (enough for 2–3 inches deep in skillet)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the coating mixture: In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to ensure the spices are evenly distributed.
  2. Mix the egg wash: In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until smooth and well combined. This will help the coating stick to the mushrooms.
  3. Coat the mushrooms: Dip each mushroom first into the egg wash, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge it in the seasoned flour and cornmeal mixture. Press gently to ensure an even coating. Repeat this process for all mushrooms to prepare them for frying.
  4. Heat the oil: In a deep skillet or pot, pour vegetable oil to a depth of 2–3 inches. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy to ensure proper frying temperature.
  5. Fry the mushrooms: Carefully place the coated mushrooms into the hot oil in batches, taking care not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3–4 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy.
  6. Drain and serve: Using a slotted spoon, remove the mushrooms from the oil and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve immediately with your choice of dipping sauce such as ranch, aioli, or spicy mayo.

Notes

  • For extra crispy mushrooms, double-dip by repeating the egg wash and coating steps before frying.
  • Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature to avoid greasy or soggy mushrooms.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the best texture and flavor.
  • Use fresh mushrooms and pat them dry to help the coating adhere better.
