Description
Cheater stuffing is an easy, flavorful stuffing made with seasoned bread cubes, aromatic vegetables, and savory broth—shortcut style for holiday meals without sacrificing taste.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf (about 12 cups) cubed day-old bread
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp dried sage
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1/2 tsp dried rosemary
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 1/2 to 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 2 large eggs, beaten
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Spread bread cubes on a baking sheet and toast in oven for 10 minutes until dry and slightly crisp.
- In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and celery; sauté until vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add garlic, sage, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper; cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
- In a large bowl, combine toasted bread cubes with sautéed vegetables.
- Whisk broth and eggs together, then pour over bread mixture. Toss gently to combine, adding more broth if needed until stuffing is moist but not soggy.
- Transfer to prepared baking dish and cover with foil.
- Bake for 25 minutes covered, then remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until top is golden and crisp.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Use any sturdy bread—French, sourdough, or even cornbread—based on preference.
- Add-ins: cooked sausage, chopped apples, dried cranberries, or nuts can boost flavor and texture.
- To make ahead: assemble in dish, cover, and refrigerate overnight; bake next day (add 10–15 minutes to baking time).
