Description

Butter Swim Biscuits are a southern-style, easy-to-make biscuit recipe featuring tender, flaky layers and a rich buttery base. Made with buttermilk for a slight tang and baked directly in melted butter, these biscuits have a golden crust with a pool of sizzling butter around them, enhancing their moist texture and flavor. Perfect as a side dish with meals or served warm with jam, honey, or gravy.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) to ensure it reaches the proper temperature for quick baking of the biscuits.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt until evenly combined.
  3. Add Buttermilk: Pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients and stir gently just until combined. Be careful not to overmix to keep the biscuits tender.
  4. Melt Butter in Baking Dish: Place the 9×9-inch baking dish into the oven for a few minutes to melt the butter in it. Then carefully remove the hot dish with the melted butter pooled inside.
  5. Assemble Biscuits: Pour the biscuit dough directly into the baking dish over the melted butter and gently spread it out evenly with a spatula or knife.
  6. Score Dough: Use a knife to cut the unbaked dough into 9 equal squares. This step helps the biscuits separate easily after baking.
  7. Bake: Bake the biscuits for 20–25 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the butter is bubbling around the edges, indicating they are fully cooked and flavorful.
  8. Cool Slightly and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the biscuits cool slightly before serving warm for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, sprinkle garlic powder or shredded cheese on top of the dough before baking.
  • These biscuits are best served warm and pair perfectly with jam, honey, or gravy.
