- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 tbsp butter (divided)
- 1/2 lb ground beef
- 1/2 lb ground pork
- 1 egg
- 1/4 tsp ground allspice
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
Instructions
- In a small bowl, soak breadcrumbs in milk and set aside.
- In a skillet, sauté chopped onion in 1 tablespoon of butter until soft. Let cool.
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, egg, soaked breadcrumbs, sautéed onion, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Shape the mixture into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter.
- In a large skillet, melt remaining butter over medium heat. Add meatballs and cook until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, sprinkle flour and whisk for 1 minute to form a roux.
- Gradually whisk in beef broth, then add heavy cream, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Simmer until thickened.
- Return meatballs to the skillet and simmer in the gravy for 10–15 minutes, until fully cooked.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes or lingonberry jam.
Notes
- For extra flavor, chill the meatball mixture before shaping.
- Lingonberry jam adds authentic Swedish sweetness to balance the savory gravy.
- You can bake the meatballs instead of pan-frying to reduce fat.
